Preliminary Ecological Appraisal/ Extended Phase 1 Habitat Survey/ Site Walkover

A preliminary ecological appraisal

A Preliminary Ecological Appraisal (previously known as an Extended Phase 1 Habitat Survey/ Walkover Survey) is the starting point for almost every ecological assessment of sites wanting to obtain planning permission. It is the first step to understanding the overall ecology of the site and allows an assessment of the possible impacts and implications of the proposed development on the ecology of the site and its surrounding areas.

It concludes with a detailed habitat map of the site, and each habitat type is assessed for its potential to support European protected and/ or notable species. In addition, a desk study is carried out to collect any existing ecological data about the site and its surroundings.
For any queries
The Preliminary Ecological Appraisal provides information about the baseline ecology of the site based on a single survey visit. The report may highlight the need to complete further Phase 2 detailed individual targeted species surveys to fully inform of planning restrictions and suitable mitigation and/ or licensing required to allow full planning permission to be granted.

This type of survey can be conducted all year round, however, the optimum period is spring to summer (April – September). Contact with a suitable ecologist early in the planning process is always advisable, so that surveys can be scheduled within the optimum period to best meet client needs.
