Great Crested Newt

Great crested newt surveys can be recommended if there is suitable terrestrial or aquatic habitat within the survey area and where water bodies are present within 250 – 500 metres of a proposed development site.
Should suitable great crested newt habitat be identified then further surveys would be recommended, including, Habitat Suitability Index Assessment to assess the suitability of water bodies and/ or great crested newt surveys to determine presence/ likely absence and great crested newt population size.
  • Habitat Suitability Index (HSI) Assessment
  • Presence/ Likely Absence Survey
  • Licensing and Mitigation Works
  • eDNA Sampling

Population Assessment

In accordance with best practice detailed by English Nature (2001), a total of six survey visits are required to inform a population assessment. In addition to the initial four survey visits a further two site visits will be need to be undertaken, with at least three of the total six visits to take place between mid-April and mid-May.
